Why should you use disposable litter boxes?
There are several reasons:
- If you’re traveling with your cat, you could bring a collapsible box in your suitcase, pop it open when you arrive, and toss the entire thing when your trip is over.
- For people with a temporary or ongoing illness or disability, it can a godsend to not have to constantly scoop and scrub litter boxes.
- If you have a new kitty or in the house or are fostering a cat (which we did once), a disposable litter box is nice way to give them their own “spot” until they adjust. They’re also great if one of your cats needs to be quarantined for some reason.
- Some people like to use a disposable box as a liner inside their standard litter box for extra odor protection.
- Simply put, they make things easier for you and cleaner for your cat!
How long do disposable litter boxes last?
Generally, disposable litter boxes last between one to four weeks, depending on:
- How many cats you have
- How absorbent your litter is
- Whether you want to scoop it, or just throw it out when it needs to be scooped
How to Choose a Disposable Litter Box
Here are some things o consider when choosing a box:
- If you’re very environmentally conscious, be sure to choose a box that is “100% biodegradable,” meaning the box will completely break down and decompose into natural elements within about a year.
- If you’re traveling, consider a box that collapses.
- Do you want a pre-filled litter box, or do you want to use your own litter?
- Do you and your cat prefer an open or a hooded litter box?
- How big is your cat? In the reviews below, I’ve included the box dimensions and also noted which ones are best for large cats
LitterMaid Disposable Litter Box
LitterMaid Disposable Litter Box
The LitterMaid disposable litter box is made of paper, measures 17 by 12.5 by 7 inches, and comes in a 3-pack. Is it biodegradable and unscented.
Reviewers liked the fact that this box didn’t leak and that it was less expensive than its competitors. One reviewer also pointed out that you can even fit one of these in a small carry on suitcase and pack inside of it.
One downside is that this litter box isn’t a good choice for large cats.
Kitty’s WonderBox Disposable Litter Box
The Kitty’s WonderBox litter box is very similar in design to the LitterMaid above (and is also biodegradable), except that Kitty’s WonderBox is made of cotton and, at 17 by 13.5 by 3.5 inches, is not quite as deep.
Amazon reviewer Potopo points out a couple things to be aware of with these litter boxes:
The litter you use in these matters… a lot.
If you use clay, the clay is going to gunk up and get stuck to the paper especially if your cat urinates a lot / in one spot. I’ve honestly yet to find a litter that works great in these, but I will say any clay litter (even if you scoop daily) has been awful, will stick to the paper at the bottom, and create a horrendous odor.
If your cat likes to urinate in one spot, you’re going to have a very annoying time. These are NOT tear / shred proof. My cat regularly scratches them up when digging. If your cat digs a lot, you’re going to have pieces of paper all over the litter.
Ten-Second Litter Boxes
Ten Second Litter Boxes (10 Week Supply)
This product contains 10 disposable litter boxes that are intended to last for 10 weeks.
Named because you can change the box in 10 seconds, these boxes have a water resistant coating and a handle so that it’s easy to carry the box to another room (and to the trash when the week is over).
They have have illustrations of green grass growing up around the edges. Does that give cats the feeling of being outside in the grass? I have no idea, but it’s a nice natural-looking design.
A few reviewers said they had trouble folding up the used box, but that it was still easy to carry out to the trash.
There were also a few mentions of occasional seepage through the bottom, which one reviewer said was easy to solve by keeping a piece of cardboard underneath the box.
Amazon reviewer K loved this litter box so much that it inspired her to go get some more cats:
Cat people!!!!! These things are the best cat invention ever! I bought them on a whim, positive that I was wasting $40. I mean not scooping a litter box…. a girl can dream. The boxes arrive neatly packed, flat, with instructions on how to fold the box into a litterbox. It’s super easy, 10 seconds really isn’t an exaggeration. Then dump in cat litter. When it’s time to dispose of the litter it folds in half and makes a closed box to throw away. No scooping. No washing. No leakage. …
… I am super excited! I’ve always dreamed of being a crazy cat lady…. but scooping all those litter boxes?? Hell no. Not a concern anymore. I’m headed to the animal shelter.
*Update*
I’ve been using these for 5 months now, and I still love them! So fast and easy to use, and no scooping. I don’t even have a scooper anymore. …… I’ve never had one bust, no leaks, no issues. And to me it’s worth $4/week to do away with scooping and the mess.
I especially appreciate the disposable boxes on days like today – my cat ate something she shouldn’t have, and (under our vet’s care) essentially had to induce diarrhea. Disgusting for everyone since the litter box is in a bedroom, and poor kitty is having to make frequent trips. So I threw out the nasty box and put out a clean one. No stink, no scrubbing, and no digging around in her own poo for kitty.
NOTE: You can also get this version of Ten Second Litter Box that looks like a kitty cottage.
Nature’s Miracle Large Disposable Litter Box
Nature’s Miracle Disposable Litter Box
Nature’s Miracle disposable litter box is made from recycled paper. It’s unique selling point is that it also contains baking soda to provide extra protection again odor.
It comes in a 2-pack and each box measured 21 by 15.25 by 7.75 inches, making it great for large cats.
Amazon reviewer Breanna, who has 3 cats and wanted to have a Kitty Emergency Kit, choose this litter box and sums up her impressions:
…. Size: Even though I read the measurements before purchasing, I’m still pleasantly surprised by how large the box is. It’s small enough to be portable, but large enough to accommodate my kitties. You could easily use it in the floorboard of a car while traveling, if needed.
QUALITY: It is SO MUCH STURDIER THAN I IMAGINED! I’m surprised by how thick each box is. Although I’m just using it for an emergency kit, I could easily see how someone could use this as their everyday litterbox. It sorta of looks like very thick papier-mâché on the outside, with a smooth interior. I’ve taken several pictures up close so you can see for yourself. I wish I could show in a picture just how sturdy it is.
PRICE: Now that I’ve seen the boxes in person, I understand why the price is what it is and feel it is fully justified…
… I would not hesitate to use this if I decided to take my babies on a road trip, and I would also happily use it as an everyday litterbox if I didn’t have so many cats. The quality is convincing me that it would work well.
Kitty Lounge Disposable Litter Tray, 50-Pack
The Kitty Lounge disposable litter tray is different from the boxes above in that:
- It’s black
- It’s plastic
- It comes in a pack of 50
These trays are stackable, so you just toss the dirty tray and a clean one is underneath it, ready to go. They measure 17.25 by 12.34 by 3.25 inches.
PetSafe Disposable and Collapsible Litter Box for Travel
PetSafe Disposable and Collapsible Litter Box for Travel
The PetSafe litter box is perfect for travel for 3 reasons:
- The box is collapsible, making it easy to pack.
- It comes with a fill bag of PetSafe crystal litter
- It comes with 8 disposable scoops
Other nice features include a special wax coating inside the box to help prevent leaking and an elevated entrance and privacy hood to reduce litter tracking.
Reviewers who used this litter box for traveling were impressed by how well the litter absorbed odor and how easy it was to pack the box in a suitcase and then quickly set it up once you arrive at your destination.
Another nice benefit was that after your trip you can dump out the litter, fold up the box, and store it somewhere until your next trip.
Kitty Sift Large Disposable Sifting Litter Box and Liners
Kitty Sift Disposable Sifting Litter Box and Liners
This sifting litter box kit includes a large litter box (14 by 18 by 8.5 inches), 3 sifting liners and a lid. The pieces are made from 100% recycled natural fiber, biodegradable material and it should last for about 4 weeks.
The concept is that instead of scooping the litter, you simply lift up the sifting trays, shake it a little to let the loose litter fall back into the box, and then dump the tray, including everything that’s on it. (Obviously, you need to use clumping litter for this to work.)
The advantages to this setup are:
- You don’t have a used, nasty scoop laying around all the time
- You don’t have to go on an archaeological dig every time you need to scoop the litter box. Just lift, shake, and toss the entire thing in the trash.
Even though some reviewers loved this box, its overall rating isn’t as high as most of the others in this post.
There were complaints that the boxes were flimsy and either fell apart easily or leaked, and also that it was difficult to sift. You can read all the negative 1-star reviews here.
Cats Desire Large Biodegradable Disposable Litter Box
Cats Desire Biodegradable & Disposable Litter Box
Cat’s Desire is Amazon’s Choice in the “cardboard litter box” category.
It features a moisture resistant barrier and is easy to fold up toss when you’re done with it.
This is a great choice if you have cats that:
- Like to kick litter all over the place; and/or
- Have, um … aiming issues
It’s also a good choice for larger cats.
Felix & Fido Pre-Filled Disposable Litter Boxes
Felix & Fido Pre-Filled Disposable Litter Boxes
Felix & Fido is Amazon’s Choice in the “disposable cat litter” category.
These environment-friendly boxes are made of 100% recycled paper and pre-filled with 100% recycled paper litter pellets. Just peel off the perforated lid, and ta-da! — instant litter box.
The pellets are specially formulated to not stick to your cat’s paws, so they won’t track it all over the place — and you you don’t have to constantly clean it up.
Sounds great, right? So what did people actually think of it?
Definitely the biggest complaint was that cats didn’t care for this eco-friendly version of litter. One reviewer even said their cat peed and pooped everywhere BUT the litter box in protest.
However, well over half the reviews were positive ones, with comments that:
- It was easy to use
- It didn’t create dust like your typical kitty litter
- It was nice to be able to scoop and flush kitty poop without worrying about the litter cloggin up the toilet.
So if you really like the idea of a disposable box pre-filled with eco-friendly litter, try this once and see what your cats think. But keep a box with “regular” litter nearby too!
Litter One Disposable Box Pre-filled with Biodegradable Cat Litter
Litter One Disposable Box Pre-filled with Biodegradable Cat Litter
Here’s another pre-filled, eco-friendly litter box option that had mixed reviews.
These boxes are filled with pine pellets that break down in less than two years, leaving no environmental impact. They also claim that these pellets absorb 3x more urine and immediately neutralize ammonia, leaving behind a fresh scent.
Reviewers were almost evenly split on their opinions of this litter box.
Some people loved how easy it was to use and that you could use the same box for weeks with no odor.
Others said they liked the idea, but their cats would not go near it.
NOTE: If you want to try this box and your cats don’t end up liking it, read the detailed and helpful comments to this review about ways to make your cats more receptive to it.
Kat Pack Biodegradable Travel Cat Litter Box
Here’s another covered litter box, making it great for cats who like to fling their litter everywhere and/or who pee in all directions.
It’s made from recycled paper (one reviewer described it as “made out of a sturdy paper bag, with a bit of a lining”) and measures 18.9 by 13 by 15 inches.
The box folds accordion-style, so it’s a good choice for travel.
If you have a very large cat, this might not be the best litter box for you, as it might be a tight squeeze for your kitty to get through the door.

I have never used Kitty Poo Club myself, but the few reviews I scanned seemed to think it was … okay. Nobody hated it, but nobody really raved about it either. A couple people said the odor control could be better.
