What is Flushable Cat Litter?

Flushable cat litter is made from biodegradable materials that break down in the environment — and won’t harden when they come in contact with water — such as:

  • Shredded newspaper
  • Sawdust
  • Corn kernels
  • Walnut shells
  • Wheat enzymes

This is different from conventional cat litter, which is often made from a combination of clay and silica that could clog up your plumbing if you try to flush it down the toilet.

According to an American Pet Products Survey, between 1 to 3 percent of cat owners use flushable litter.

If you’re new to flushable litter — or are trying out a new type of flushable litter — make sure to flush small amounts at a time at first to see how your plumbing system handles.

The World’s Best Multi-Cat Clumping Corn Litter, in our view, is unquestionably the best overall flushable cat litter.

This ecologically friendly trash is composed entirely of crushed whole-kernel maize and has no artificial fragrances or additives. This makes it an excellent alternative for homes with allergies or respiratory problems in either cats or humans.

When this lightweight litter comes into contact with moisture, it forms clumps rapidly, yet they are completely safe to flush and will function with most sewage and septic systems. This flushable cat litter is ideal for multi-cat households and contains odor-controlling chemicals.

A 28-pound bag should last up to 67 days in a two-cat household and 45 days in a three-cat household.

Amazon reviewer Davina owns four cats and says this is the best litter out there:

… I have tried every kind of litter you can think of and World’s Best Cat Litter, Clumping Litter Formula for Multiple Cats is by far the BEST product out there.

Cleaning the litter box has always been a dreadful experience but using Worlds Best cat litter is a different experience. Not having dust is a wonderful thing. Not only is it easier to breathe while cleaning it’s great for cats who have allergies.

This litter needs to be cleaned everyday. No exceptions. The litter clumps very well making it extremely easy to scoop and bag and/or flush. Every scoop must be replaced with fresh clean litter. It’s important to keep enough litter in the box. Not enough litter leads to a horrible urine smell. Also, this product should be completely dumped and replaced 1x a month …

Scent is unique (sweet sour smell) but much better than your average litter. It’s made from whole-kernel corn and all four of my cats LOVE this product. They never have accidents and it also helps my cat who suffers from allergies. I order the 28lb bag and it lasts up to 6 weeks with 4 cats!!! The product is extremely expensive BUT based on the fact that it works (if you clean daily) and lasts a long time I feel the price point is fair …

Pros:

  • There are three different bag sizes to choose from
  • A quick-clumping solution that is 99 percent dust-free
  • Tracking is low
  • Natural substances are used
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Expensive

okocat Original Low-Dust Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter with Odor Controlokocat Original Low-Dust Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter with Odor Controlokocat Original Low-Dust Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter with Odor Control

Okocat Wood Clumping Cat Litter is a great choice if you’re seeking the best flushable cat litter for the money.

It’s made of natural wood fibers, which naturally prevents enzymes from bonding with liquid and waste to stop the creation of ammonia and odor.

This sustainable litter is ecologically friendly since all of these items were acquired responsibly. Because the wood fibers absorb moisture and scents on touch, this litter does not require artificial perfumes to mask undesirable odors. The litter is free of artificial fragrance, synthetic chemicals, toxic dyes, and GMOs.

The velvety texture of this cat litter appeals to most cats, as does the fragrance-free recipe. This 99% dust-free litter is lightweight and easy to transport and pour.

The company recommend flushing these clumps separately when disposing of the litter since it creates easy-to-scoop clumps.

One 19.8-ounce package will last around three months in a two-cat household, making it a good value for money. While many reviewers praise this litter, it’s worth noting that it’s not without flaws.

Pros:

  • Choose from three box sizes
  • 99% dust-free
  • Fragrance-free
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Forms easy-to-scoop clumps
  • Great value for money

Cons:

  • Can track through the house

Next Gen Pet Green Tea Fresh Cat Litter

We chose the Next Gen Pet Unscented Green Tea Clumping Wood Cat Litter as the best dust-free choice.

Wood fibers and green tea leaves are used to make this all-natural kitty litter. Green tea includes catechin, an antioxidant and antibacterial compound that inhibits the development of germs that cause obnoxious litter box aromas.

While there is no artificial aroma added to this litter, and it is promoted as an unscented product, the addition of green tea provides a fresh and delightful natural scent. (One reviewer described it as “pleasant and light.”)

One cat should get 4 to 6 weeks out of a 5-pound bag of NextGen Pet.

This lightweight litter is simple to use and makes clumps that are easy to shovel. It’s also simple to flush, and the remaining litter may be composted when you need to change your cat’s litter box contents.

This cat litter has a lot of positive reviews because of its reduced dust, good odor control, and eco-credentials.

Pros:

  • There are two different bag sizes to choose from
  • Effectively controls smells
  • Dust-free and lightweight
  • The aroma is natural and fresh

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • The large particle size bothers some cats

Tip for using flushable cat litter:

Consider purchasing a gardening sifter and placing it on top of a Home Depot-style plastic bucket.

Dump the entire litter box in there and quickly sift it. Then you can dispose of the clumps and poop in the toilet and have clean litter in the bottom of your bucket, which you can then pour back in the litter box.

This cat litter is designed for families with many cats.

It is made of biodegradable wheat grains. The starch in these granules absorbs moisture right away, while the additional natural enzymes work to neutralize the odor. The multi-cat solution offers double the clumping and odor control when compared to sWheat’s fast-scoop formulation.

This litter is vet-recommended for all cats, even kittens, due to its mild components. It uses natural plant extracts to eliminate odors and is made from renewable resources with no added dyes or perfumes and is 100 percent biodegradable. (Some reviewers complained that it “smelled like sawdust,” but some might argue that’s a better alternative than smelling like weird chemicals.)

It is available in three different bag sizes, the largest of which is 36 pounds, and is ideal for households with numerous cats.

sWheat litter can track a bit more than other types, and clumps of litter may crumble apart if left for too long before being cleaned up, according to reviewers. One reviewer pointed out that a metal scoop made it easier to get the litter clumps.

Pros:

  • Eco-friendly and lightweight
  • Exceptional odor management
  • There are no artificial scents
  • Low levels of dust

Cons:

  • Prone to tracking
  • Clumps don’t hold together that well

I was confused for a moment, thinking that I had make a mistake when researching this cat litter … but yes, even though it’s a clay litter, Cat’s Pride Premium is also flushable.

Sodium bentonite is used in most clay litters; however, Cat’s Pride uses a different sort of natural clay. (Albeit the company does not identify which one.) The clay used in this litter absorbs a lot of water and creates hard clumps that are easy to scoop and flush.

This lightweight litter is simple to pour and store, and it comes in a plastic container to keep it dry and sanitary. The fragrant solution retains smells well, leaving your home feeling clean and fresh.

Each 17.5-pound bag of litter should last up to 60 days in a one-cat home.

This flushable cat litter is inexpensive, but some customers complain that it generates a lot of dust. It’s also not good practice to flush this litter down the toilet if you have a septic tank.

This reviewer particularly likes how Cat’s Pride doesn’t stick to the litter box:

This kitty litter has a fine texture. It clumps really well. I have purchased other clumping kitty litters that have a coarser texture and when my cat pees in them, the wetness spreads out and becomes a gooey, sticky mud that is hard to remove from the pan. I broke a scooper once from that kind of litter. You will not have that problem with this brand!

I also like that it only weighs ten pounds for me to lift, but still does the job of 20 pounds of kitty litter very well!

Pros:

  • Excellent value for money
  • Lightweight
  • The aroma is light and fresh

Cons:

  • There is just one size of pail available
  • Septic tank systems are not compatible with this litter
  • It is possible that it will produce some dust

Almo Nature Unscented Clumping Grass Cat Litter

Almo Nature Cat LitterAlmo Nature Cat LitterAlmo Nature Cat Litter

This litter is composed entirely of plant fiber and is flushable, compostable, and biodegradable. The starches in the cassava root, which supply the vegetable fiber, aid in clumping moisture together, while natural plant enzymes aid in odor neutralization.

This litter’s gentle texture is ideal for sensitive cats that dislike the sensation of harsher litter on their delicate paws.

For one cat, a 10-pound bag of this cat litter should last slightly about ten weeks. This cat litter is easy to flush and clumps nicely, but the soft texture might generate a lot of dust, adhere to your cat’s paws, and track over the home.

This Amazon reviewer was “absolutely shocked” that this litter was able to create solid, easy to scoop clumps:

…. I’m super pleased with this cat litter. I love the natural scent – it’s light and clean smelling. (I don’t think it’s meant to be scented at all, I think it’s just the nature of the material used.) I don’t have any problems with urine smells or even solid waste smells. This litter tends to desiccate the solid waste which is a good thing.

My biggest relief is that it doesn’t seem to stick to my cat’s paws. Every other clumping litter regardless of the price point will stick to my cat’s paws.
I do agree that this tracks a bit more than I would like, but I was already sweeping up around the litter box every day because of the way my cat uses it. So that in itself is not a big issue …

Pros:

  • There are two different bag sizes to choose from
  • Natural resources were used in the formula of this litter
  • Clumping that works.

Cons:

  • Can become dusty
  • Not produced in the U.S.A
  • Prone to tracking through the house

Cat’s Pride Easy Scoop Scented Cat Litter

Cat's Pride Easy Scoop Scented Cat LitterCat’s Pride Easy Scoop Scented Cat LitterCat's Pride Easy Scoop Scented Cat Litter

Scoopable Scented Clumping Litter from Cat’s Pride is a lightweight litter that provides the same number of uses as 20 pounds of a comparable brand. This litter should last two cats around two weeks or one cat 35 days in a 12-pound jug.

Although this scented litter helps to minimize smells, some cats may find it too overpowering, particularly if they have allergies or respiratory difficulties.

Because this clay-based litter doesn’t include sodium bentonite, it’s acceptable to flush down residential sewage systems. However, Cat’s Pride advises against flushing it down septic systems.

This Cat’s Pride Scented Scoopable Clumping litter creates nice clumps at first, but if you don’t clear them out straight enough, they’ll start to come apart.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Controls odors effectively
  • Excellent value for money

Cons:

  • Some cats may be bothered by the fragrance of the litter
  • Fine consistency can track if it isn’t dust-free

Rufus & Coco Wee Kitty Eco Plant Tofu Cat Litter

This litter is both completely biodegradeable and vegan, made from sustainable and naturally absorbent wheat and soy fibers.

It forms scoopable clumps which disintegrate in water and can be flushed away in all kinds of toilets, including septic tanks.

The company claims their litter is much more absorbent than other brands of wheat litter, making their litter last longer and therefore save you money.

Pros:

  • Biodegradable
  • Absorbent
  • Less dust and tracking compared to pine pellets

Cons:

  • Releases dust
  • Isn’t effective in odor-control

It’s A Tea Potty! Weruva Cat Litter

It's A Tea Potty! Weruva Cat LitterIt’s A Tea Potty! Weruva Cat LitterIt's A Tea Potty! Weruva Cat Litter

Weruva Green Tea Natural Cat Litter is a green tea and hinoki wood-based cat litter. This hypoallergenic recipe contains no grain, wheat or soy making it a suitable option for allergy-prone cats. Kittens may safely use it as well.

Green tea contains antioxidant characteristics that help eliminate smells and inhibit germs from spreading, while hinoki wood naturally stops bacteria and mold from growing.

As a clumping agent, potato starch is added to this litter, and it works well as long as the clumps are scooped out soon.

This litter is low in dust, and the green tea and Hinoki wood both have a wonderful natural aroma, despite the fact that it isn’t chemically scented. (One reviewer said it “smells woody.”)

Because the pellets of this litter are huge and won’t always fall through some litter scoops, you may need to find an alternative litter scoop for this litter.

One reviewer offered this scooping tip:

Here’s a technique for Weruva litter that I found works relatively well by minimizing sifting: Use the scoop to lift out a clump and the surrounding pellets. Empty everything on top of the litter in the box. The loose pellets will fall away. Then gently scoop up the clump.

This works best if your cats don’t cover they urinate so you can see the wet spots on the surface. Otherwise, you’ll have to gently probe with the scoop to find clumps without breaking them.

One cat should get 50 days out of an 11.7-pound bag.

Pros:

  • There are two different bag sizes to choose from
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Free of grain

Cons:

  • There are tracks all around the home
  • Some folks dislike the odor
  • Can only be used on shorthaired cats

*** It’s also worth noting that Weuva is a family-owned business. It’s always nice to support those when you can.
