Best Litter Boxes for Cats That Kick Litter

Orange and white cat in box

You love your cat, but you hate cleaning up the litter box. Plus, cats can be a little weird. They like to kick litter out of their boxes, and it’s a huge pain in the rear to constantly clean up — not to mention that nobody likes the yucky feeling of accidentally stepping into a small pile of litter with your bare feet.

There are lots of different kinds of litter boxes on the market, and most of them aren’t very good at keeping the litter inside. This makes it a lot harder for us cat parents to clean up after our cats have used it.

Fortunately, this problem is easy to solve — if you have the right litter box.

Here are the best cat litter boxes for messy cats who like to kick out their litter (and then track it everywhere.) These products will keep even the messiest litter kickers from getting bits of litter all over your house!

Video Review — Modkat Tap Entry Litter Box

After doing hours of research for this review, I decided to purchase the Modkat Top Entry Litter Box.

After owning it for several months, I recorded this video review and added it to the post:

This enclosed kitty litter box (which measures 20 by 15 by 15 inches) features high walls for cats’ privacy. The wide, top entry design easily accommodates larger cats and has a grated surface to collect any remaining litter from your cat’s paws.

Reviewers liked that this litter box:

  • Fits nicely in a corner (which is a great option for folks who lives in small spaces)
  • Has a flat bottom with no crevices for litter to get stuck in
  • Has a lid that flips to the side, so you don’t need to remove the entire thing to clean the box
  • Has a more reasonable price compared to other top-entry litter boxes

Nature’s Miracle High-Sided Litter Box

The high sides on this litter box make it easier to keep the mess contained, while the non-stick surface ensures easy cleaning. The item dimension is 32 by 23.4 by 18.25 inches at and weighs 13 pounds.

Amazon reviewer B likes this litter box, but says that it isn’t perfect:

Pros:

  • The box is smoothly molded on the inside, which means easy scooping and no frustrating nooks or corners.
  • The inside is slick which means that I just tip the box at an angle, give the side with a clump a swift thump, and the clump un-sticks itself from the side and makes scooping very easy.
  • The molded “handles” that run along the top rim of the box make it very easy to move around (the box is tucked under a floating vanity, so I need to pull it out for cleaning)

Cons:

  • …The three high sides are great for containing litter and high pee. Murphy’s Law however, means my kit will enter, then without turning around, she commences so her back side is perfectly lined up with the 5″ high low entry point. Because she tends to only half squat, you can imagine the mess outside the box.

Modkat Flip Litter Box Kit with Scoop and Reusable Tarp Liner

At 16.8 inches high, this box’s full height design means that cats won’t have to worry about leakage or litter scatter. (This is a great box for cats who enjoy peeing on the walls for whatever reason, or who have “bad aim.”)

It has three privacy positions — closed, half open, and fully open — so you can use whichever one your cat prefers. The hook-and-liner system keeps the liners in place so you don’t need to keep replacing them every couple of days like with other brands. (In fact, the liners last up to three months.)

Instead of removing a big, clunky, dirty hood every time you need to clean the litter box, just swivel open the lid and scoop. You can open it half way for daily scooping or fully open it when it’s time to remove the liner.

Reviewers loved how:

  • The box isn’t in two pieces, so there are no cracks for sprayed urine to seep through
  • The box is compact, which is perfect for people in small living areas
  • It looks more attractive than your average litter box

Modkat Top-Entry Litter Box

The Modkat litter box is a top-entry design that nearly eliminates litter tracking. The locking lid acts as a walk off mat and keeps all of your floors clean while the swivel lid allows you to easily scoop any leftover messes in an instant. The reusable liners are tailored to fit perfectly inside this kitty hideaway for up to 3 months use or more before needing replacement.

The modern design looks great in any home. It comes in white (like the photo above), gray, or black.

It comes with everything you need, including:

  • A full height seamless base to prevent leaks
  • An easy open swivel lid
  • A large hanging litter scoop
  • A reusable tarp liner that makes removing the solid waste effortless

Amazon reviewer Stephanie had this to say:

Here are the pros I’ve noticed:

They cut down on the amount of litter tracked throughout the room. Much appreciated.
  • The design eliminates the ‘fun’ of seeing the gifts your cats have left for you. Also much appreciated.
  • They hold their own (excellent quality) scoopers. Let’s be honest – finding a place for those gross things is usually a problem.
  • Seeing your cat’s head half poked out – eyes staring at some far off place in the distance – while taking care of business is F U N N Y.
  • These are much more attractive litter boxes than the standard.

Clevercat Top Entry Litterbox

This top entry litter box nearly eliminates tracking, prevents over-the-edge spills and reduces unpleasant odors. It is also excellent for cats that love to dig and kick litter. Another benefit is that Clevercat is be dog proof from most dogs. (Click here to see a photo of a dog who unsuccessfully tried to get in this litter box.)

You can also choose to use Clevercat custom heavy duty liners with it to make clean up quicker and easier.

The box measures 20 by 15 by 15 inches.

This box isn’t recommended for disabled, elderly, or very large cats, though, as they might have difficulty getting in/out of it due to size constraints.

Amazon reviewer Joan C describes why she loves this litter box:

We recently moved to another apartment. We had hard floors which was new to our fur babies. The cats would constantly scratch at the litter or kick the litter out. After hearing about Clevercat, I decided to order this item.

To my pleasant surprise the cats did not reject it, like some have in past reviews. I put litter into the box and placed some of their feces into the box and mixed all of the litter. The cats immediate let began using the box, and learning how to stick their heads out while doing so. They decreased their scratching as well and the constant litter that used to fall out in the last decreased about 95%. There is minimum to none of litter tracking. The mat on top of the box has also helped to catch some of the litter coming out from their paws. The litter box has been a life saver and has saved me time from constantly cleaning the walls and floor and sweeping up litter.

Also, the smell! My cat Milo has a fairly demonic possessed butt! Thankfully the Clevercat has been able to conceal most of the smell …

Petmate Booda Dome Cat Litter Box

This 21 by 21 inch dome-topped cat litter box ensures your pet’s privacy, while keeping the floors free of unnecessary mess. The grooved entrance gently wipes away dirt as they exit so that you can feel a bit more relaxed knowing their paws are clean before exiting.

The ramp is 50% taller than average making it easy for cats of all sizes and ages to get in and out without getting dusty or dirty.

Reviewers liked how:

  • Even large cats and senior cats with mobility issues can easily enter and exit the box.
  • It looks fairly attractive, as litter boxes go.
  • The ramp has little bumps that help clean the cat’s paws as it exits.

One disappointment with this box is that the lid just sits on top instead of snapping in place, and some reviewers said it would fall off easily. Also, people with cats who pee on the side walls of the litter box said that the pee seeped out between the lid and the bottom.
