As you know, every cat is its own unique individual, and no two have the same exact personality or behaviors. (Just like children. I have three of each.)
Generally speaking, healthy cats pee around one to three times a day. But of course, some cats are overachievers in that area.
Increased urination could be due to many things, ranging from something as simple as increased water intake to an underlying medical issue.
If your cat pees more frequently than most (or if you have multiple cats, who are therefore collectively peeing a lot), it may not be sufficient to just grab the first bag of cat litter that you see at the store. Not only is your house likely to smell like pee all the time, but you’ll constantly be buying and replacing the litter.
Fortunately, we live in a wonderful age where there are cat litters on the market designed to significantly minimize odors from your litter box.
After reading this post, you’ll not only be able to choose the best litter for your kitties, but also know what defines “a lot” when it comes to cats peeing, when to know if it’s a problem, and what to do about it.

Blue Buffalo Naturally Fresh Walnut Clumping Litter
Blue Buffalo Naturally Fresh Multi-Cat Clumping Litter
Our overall top find for cat litter that ticks all of our boxes is the Naturally Fresh Walnut cat litter. I didn’t even know there was such a thing before today, but this litter is made from materials that are naturally found in walnut shells. These materials can naturally absorb orders, which means no more smelly litter boxes. Who knew? In fact, Naturally Fresh super clump cat litter is so absorbent, they claim that one bag of Naturally Fresh is equal to three bags of the leading clay litter. In addition to these materials, the litter also contains a probiotic that is activated by moisture. So, when your furry friend goes to the bathroom, the probiotic immediately neutralizes any odors left behind. It comes in both unscented and scented variants, so you can choose which one works for you. A product that’s environmentally friendly always gets extra points, which made it a breeze to put this litter at the top of the list. Not only is Naturally Fresh biodegradable, but it is also sustainable, renewable, non-GMO, plant-based, produces zero waste, and it contains no toxins. Your cats will thank you for switching to this litter, too, because it is soft on paws and has little to no harmful dust particles. Naturally Fresh is also a clumping cat litter, so you can ensure an easy cleanup. So does it work? Can walnuts and probiotics really eliminate litter box odor? Apparently so. An Amazon reviewer has 13 cats in their home (she fosters animals through the Humane Society) and claims there is NO SMELL of either litter or cat waste — even when she’s sitting near the litter box. How amazing is that? Another Amazon reviewer called this Naturally Fresh Litter “voodoo magic cat litter” and also offers a tip for other cat owners:
… I received my first bag 2 months ago and I am only *almost* finished with it now. I only have one cat that uses a box, but still. 2 months. 1 smallish bag. But it is the performance that is truly magical. Despite the box being in our dining room, I keep forgetting to scoop it because I just don’t smell it. The product itself has no real odor and it even somehow makes poop scents disappear quickly… and my kitty stinks at burying it… like I don’t even understand how it takes care of that smell… The product itself is weird to a newbie. When I first dumped it in my box, I was sure that I would hate it because it is so dark and has large grains and just didn’t seem like it would work. It does. It’s amazing … PRO TIP: I saw some reviews that said that it is hard to scoop because you can’t really do the scoop & shake method that we are used to. This is true. While it clumps like a dream (really… this stuff it AMAZING), if you go at it like you normally would, you will be frustrated with having a bunch of non-clumped litter that won’t leave your scooper. So… start normally: get your scooper all the way under the pee clump & lift it up slightly, but then pull the scooper out in a reverse motion without picking up the clump. The clump will magically end up on the surface where you can just pick it up with zero sifting …One thing to be aware of is that it may be more difficult to introduce kittens to this litter because of the texture. So if you have a kitten, wait a few months before giving this litter a try. Pros: • Available in scented or unscented variants • Good for multiple cats • Comes in different sizes to suit your needs • Environmentally responsible • Clumping • Contains no toxins Cons: • It might not work when introducing kittens to litter boxes
ARM & HAMMER Clump & Seal Platinum Cat Litter
ARM & HAMMER Clump & Seal Platinum Cat Litter
Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Platinum Litter boasts that it’s 100% dust-free and has 10% more odor eliminators than their Fresh Scent litter, including — of course — ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda. Their patented formula “seals and destroys odors on contact” (which gave me a funny little cartoon image in my head). They guarantee your home will stay odor-free for 7 days Customers liked how this litter comes in a cardboard box with a strap handle, making it easier to transport, store, and pour than litter that comes in a bag (like Dr. Elsey’s, below). They also liked how the litter had more of a “sand” consistency, and was therefore easier to scoop than chunkier litter with larger granules. If you are very sensitive to “cat litter dust,” or just sick of trying different cat litter that claims to be dust-free but really isn’t, then you’re gonna this stuff. There were several reviews like this one:
… On a whim I tried this because so many people were raving about how little it smells. It has a faint, fresh scent to it that I can only smell when I’m pouring or scooping it. Those of you highly sensitive to smells may not like this, but I’d still encourage you to at least try it. It’s a pretty faint/light smell. When I poured it for the first time, I expected there to be a cloud of dust, but there was none. Literally none. I don’t have asthma so there’s that, but I am usually pretty sensitive to dust and particles in the air and this didn’t bother me at all. When kitty uses the box and digs, nothing permeates the room–dust or smell …Pros: • Virtually dust free • Good for multiple cats • No unpleasant odor • Clumps well for easy cleaning • Good odor control Cons: • Some people claimed the litter had a scent they disliked
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter
Dr. Elsey’s ULTRA cat litter is one of the most affordable options on our list. It comes in either a 20- or 40-pound bag and is ideal for a household with multiple kitties. Because it uses natural clay as its main ingredient, Dr. Elsey’s is hypoallergenic, making it perfect for households (like mine) where one or more of your humans is allergy-prone. So, if your cat or anyone in your family is allergy-prone. The clay produces hard clumps that won’t deteriorate, making cleanup a breeze. The litter is also ideal for sifting or mechanical litter boxes, so you can rest easy knowing that your cat’s litter box will stay clean and fresh, no matter what. Dr. Elsey’s is also unscented and 99% dust-free, which helps eliminate dust tracking from little paws. It’s soft enough to use for kittens, adults, and even elderly cats alike. Amazon reviewer Kristen was pleasantly surprised to discover that her small apartment didn’t smell like a litter box, thanks to this litter:
… I use this in combination with my Litter Genie in the 1/2 bathroom which is right at my front door, and you wouldn’t even know there was a litter box when you walked in. It’s so clean that I don’t even remove it when I have guests using that bathroom. It’s also unscented, which is great and I’m sure is much better for a cat who is constantly cleaning her toes. The grains are very large so I only need to use one mat outside the box and the litter never gets tracked out of the bathroom .. I always purchase the larger bag, which is 40 lbs, and it usually last me 1.5 to 2 months. I am on my 11th bag since February 2015. I only dispose of the used litter when I’m opening a new bag. It clumps so well that I haven’t ever had the feeling that I needed to clean out the box, so I will continue to top it off when it gets low until my bag runs out … I only have one cat but I think that this litter would be great for multi-cat households. This is the first non-flushable litter that I’ve had and I was concerned that I’m too lazy for a non-flushable, but combined with the Litter Genie I spend about 20 seconds scooping each day, and another 10 minutes to clean out the box each time I buy a new bag … The first time I emptied the Litter Genie I was so amazed that I had to show everyone I knew! [Click here to see the photo.]…Pros: • Affordable • Different size options are available • Clumping • Made from natural ingredients • 99% dust-free • Hypoallergenic • Easy to clean • Good for multiple cats • Good for cats of all ages Cons: • Only available as unscented litter
Tofu Natural Flushable Cat Litter
Tofu Natural Flushable Cat Litter
PETNF is another great choice for cats that urinate more frequently or at a higher volume. This flushable litter is made from natural, organic, and GMO-free ingredients, including pea fiber, corn starch, and starch. The pea fibers help to give the litter faster absorption, and the corn starch is known for its natural ability to aid in clumping. With the addition of pea fibers, PETNF’s Tofu cat litter is extra-absorbent. It can absorb urine and other fluids in 1.5 seconds. Like some other litters on this list, PETNF is 99% dust-free and so won’t give off any unwanted particles and will reduce tracking. It is also soft on little paws and good for cats of all ages. You should keep in mind that if your cat suffers from pea allergies, this may not be the right choice for you. The pea fibers used in producing this litter may cause adverse reactions in your cat. One note from a reviewer — DO NOT try to clean litter immediately after cat pees. It takes some time for the clump to harden. so if you try to scoop it right away, you’ll just end up with a pile or mushy litter. Amazon reviewer Pixie wrote in detail why this litter was good, but not perfect:
Pros:Pros: • Flushable • Fast clumping • Extra-absorbent • GMO-free • Natural and organic ingredients • 99% dust-free • Soft on paws • Good for cats of all ages Cons: • Slightly more expensive than other kitty littersLightweight Not too dusty So far, no bad odor My cat uses it with no issues, and she does bury things in it Does clump Fulfills the basic requirements of a practical cat litter without too much fuss Cons:… Update: I’ll be sticking with this for now. I’m still hoping for a more cost effective solution, but it does go further than regular litter. ~2 weeks is a pretty good estimate for one bag, although you have to be sparing, and I only have one cat. I imagine a multi-cat household would get pretty expensive pretty quick. But it works, it doesn’t give me any allergic reactions, and although it tracks worse than pine [which I can’t use do to an allergic reaction], it’s not as bad as regular litter.
- Expensive for the amount you get. Even if it goes further than clay litter, I don’t think this amount is going to last me all that long.
- The clumps are really sticky. They stuck to the bottom of the box and to the scoop; the box will have to be washed out more often than with other litters.
- Has a strong scent which isn’t unpleasant to me, but I’m lucky my cat liked it (she sometimes won’t go near things that have a strong smell). I can’t tell if it’s an added fragrance, or just the way this material smells (no fragrance is mentioned in the ingredients)
sWheat Scoop Premium+ Natural Clumping Wheat Cat Litter
sWheat Scoop Premium+ Natural Clumping Wheat Cat Litter
sWheat Scoop uses ion technology in their wheat-based, fast-clumping litter to help reduce urine and ammonia odors. The enzymes and starches in this product made entirely of wheat improve clumping and eliminate odors from your kitty’s litter box. The clumps develop quickly, are solid, and compact, making scooping a breeze. This means that your job is simple when it comes time to clean up. Just scoop and flush. To further eradicate odors, sWheat Scoop employs natural plant extracts rather than hazardous chemicals. It is 100% biodegradable and made from renewable resources with no additional dyes or scents. While traditional litters use clay that is extracted through strip mining, sWheat Scoop’s ingredients are grown by farmers, crushed up, and packaged for sale. Because of this process, sWheat Scoop is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and flushable. It is also suitable for kitties of all ages and sizes, so no matter how many cats you have or what life stage they’re in, sWheat Scoop has you covered. While sWheat Scoop had plenty of positive reviews, there was also a small amount of customers who definitely did not like it, calling it one of the worst cat litters they’ve ever used. Click here to read all the negative 1-star reviews. Pros: • Flushable • Clumping • Advanced odor control • Biodegradable • Environmentally friendly • Good for cats of all sizes and ages • Good for multiple cats • No added dyes or perfumes Cons: • The plant extracts used in this product are not as strong as some artificial scents
✅ What Is A Normal Amount Of Pee For A Cat?
Several things might influence the frequency with which your beloved kitty uses the litter box. Cats have developed an incredible hydration mechanism, which means they generally only urinate two to three times each day. Of course, some cats may urinate more frequently, and others may hardly use the litter box more than once or twice a day. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your cat is unhealthy. Actually, much like humans, some healthy cats are prone to using the bathroom more often. Before you become concerned about your cat’s bathroom habits, you should establish a baseline on which to base your worries. If your cat naturally excretes more urine and has been consistent in that habit, it’s probably nothing to stress over! If you notice that your cat is using its litter box more frequently or is excreting a higher volume of urine, there may be a few contributing factors you could look into.✅ Why Is My Cat Producing So Much Urine?
There are several factors that could influence how often little Fluffy uses the litter box, including his or her water intake, diet, and certain medications. If your cat has been drinking more water lately, you will see an increase in its urination patterns. Similarly, wet food introduces an extra source of hydration to your cat. So, if your kitty regularly feasts on wet food, they will have an increase of fluids in their diet and will have to excrete these fluids more often. Also, if you cat is on any medication, be aware that certain corticosteroids can cause more frequent urination in cats. According to Pet Health Network, if your cat is urinating larger than normal volumes, it’s called polyuria. Usually this is a result of the body’s inability to regulate urine formation. This could be due to:- Excess blood glucose
- Kidney disease (sadly, many years ago we lost a one year old kitty to this)
- Diabetes or hyperthyroidism
