Cat Litter: The Bane of Our Existence

If there’s a downside to owning a kitty (or two three), it’s gotta be dealing with a the litter box.

And yes, somehow I ended up with that responsibility in our famiy.

Not only is scooping the box a pain (and sometime kind of gross) but let’s face it … it’s a box of poop in our house.

Yuck.

Are there ways to make this chore less difficult and messy and make our litter boxes more pleasant to be around?

To some extent, yes.

For example, I’ve found that switching from clay to crystal cat litter made life a little nicer. I no longer have to scrape gross clumps off the bottom and sides of the box.

We’ve also started using a top-entry litter box that not only helps keep litter from being everywhere, but also looks nicer than just seeing a tray of lumps sitting in your home. (Plus it’s kind of cute to see your kitty’s head out of when they use it.)

Then there are some people just say, “Heck with it,” and get a disposable litter box that you can just toss in the trash every few weeks. (These are always great if you ever need to travel with you cat.)

And while we’ve never tried this, there is some furniture specifically designed to hide a litter box.

These articles discuss different litters and litter boxes for different needs.
