Grooming Tips for Cats That Run from the Brush

This is embarrassing, but true: I have a hard time not hurting my cats when I brush them.

I don’t want to hurt them, of course. It’s just that I’m so intent on giving them a good, through brushing that I end up brushing too hard.

Even when I try not to brush too hard.

If your cat runs away from the brush in terror (whether it’s your fault or not), there are a few simple things you can try.

The first thing I discovered were these grooming gloves. They look like regular gloves (well, actually a kind of scary version of regular gloves), but as you pet your cat, you’re secretly collecting all that loose fur. No stress, no pain. Just snuggles and a cleaner house.

Another thing you can try is letting your cat do the brushing themselves, on their own terms. These self-grooming corner brushes attach to walls or furniture so your cat can rub, scratch, and shed their loose fur without you lifting a finger. It’s stress-free grooming disguised as a little massage. Pop one up and watch them do all the work—happy cat, less fur tumbleweeds.

Ultimately, I decided to order this soft silicone brush. While I haven’t tried it yet, but I can tell just by looking at it that, even if I press hard, it’s going to dig into out cats’ skin like our current brush (which looks more like a rake) does.

Brushing a cat who runs at the sight of a brush (even when it’s for good reason, cough) can feel impossible, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Whether it’s a self-grooming corner brush, silicone pet brush, or grooming gloves, pick what fits your cat’s personality—and yours. Start with one, see how they like it, and turn grooming into something everyone actually enjoys.
